steps2work Services

steps2work is an employment and training centre, also known as an “ETC”.  We specialize in assisting people in order to identify, obtain, and maintain employment, as they move through their mental health recovery.  steps2work does not place people directly into paid employment, but rather, supports participants by assisting them in reaching their employment potential.  This is achieved through a combination of one-on-one meetings with an Employment Training Specialist and in class workshops covering a variety of topics for skill development relevant to employment as well as to encourage personal wellness.

Assessment Services

steps2work supports participants in exploring and identifying vocational goals.  This is the exploration stage of services here at steps2work.  Where this stage begins is dependent on whether or not a participant has a vocational goal in mind from the beginning.  If not, they may be asked to complete the CareerScope (Interest and Aptitude) Assessment, to assist in developing one.  This phase of service typically includes meetings with an Employment Training Specialist (ETS) and discussing employment goals and different vocational avenues to explore as career/job possibilities.  There is an emphasis on attending in-house workshops, targeted at a variety of employment and wellness related topics.

A vocational evaluation uses both real work experience plus assessment tests to provide information useful in identifying potentially suitable employment/training options including:

  • Transferable skills
  • Vocational interests
  • Work aptitudes and abilities
  • Worker characteristics and behaviors
  • Academic abilities and potential

Our primary assessment instrument is CareerScope Online, a valid and objective web-based career assessment and planning system. CareerScope measures a person’s interests and aptitudes and recommends careers and specific job titles that are aligned with their individual profiles.

Community-Based Work Assessments (CBWA/E’s) are practical, unpaid assessments arranged with regular community-based employers and are structured for 18 shifts with a minimum of 15 hours per week. Our Employer partners provide a mutually benefiting opportunity for participants to explore and identify employment skills, interests and existing or potential barriers to paid employment in a realistic employment setting.

It is the goal of steps2work to build positive relationships in the business community.  As we take the time to understand the needs of businesses, it is hoped that businesses will find it beneficial to approach us with their employment needs. To maintain these relationships, we not only offer ongoing support during work placements, but also post-employment support should you choose to employ an individual placed by steps2work.

All clients funded for services by steps2work are covered by our Workers Compensation agreement with the Province of Manitoba Department of Family Services: Regulation #545/88 under Section 7 of the Workers Compensation Act.

These may include individual and/or small group activities, as well as community-based work experiences, job shadows and mock interviews.
